Supplementary Game Notes

Game 20: Newark Bears @ Atlantic City Surf, Saturday, May 24, 2003, Game 1 of DH

Note:  We scored this game listening to the internet broadcast.

Note:  This was supposed to be a 7-inning game, first game of a double-header.  It was rescheduled from May 23 due to inclement weather.

Way to go:  Danny Clyburn extended his hitting streak to 13 games with his single in the 4th inning.  He started and ended the game with a season batting average of .333.

Bottom of the 5th inning:  One of Marval’s foul balls was a popup down the right field line, and was dropped by Quintana.  Our understanding of the rules indicates that Quintana should be charged a “dropped foul error.”  See Rule 10.13(a), which states that “an error shall be charged against any fielder when he muffs a foul fly, to prolong the time at bat of a batter whether the batter subsequently reaches first base or is put out.”  However, such an error was not charged.

Bottom of the 9th inning:  Jason Torres made a great stop of a potential wild pitch that would have won the game for the Surf.  Unfortunately, he pulled a hamstring moving over to stop the ball.  In the top of the 10th, he legged out an infield single and reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Santora, which served to exacerbate the injury.  He then caught for the bottom of the 10th (LaFlair was already out of the game as Torres pinch hit for him in the 7th).  He sat out game 2, and Sunday’s game as well.
