Supplementary Game Notes

Game 31:  Somerset Patriots @ Newark Bears, Thursday, June 5, 2003, Game 1 of DH

Note:  This was a 7-inning game, rescheduled from a rainy June 4.  In the Atlantic League, doubleheader games are 7 innings.

Note:  The Somerset Patriots’ Luis Lopez is wearing number 33.  Our records as posted to this site showed him with 0, but we have updated this in our database and it will be correct for future games.

Bottom of the 3rd inning:  Why oh why don’t Atlantic League umpires ever signal an infield fly?  When Pete Maestrales came up to bat in the bottom of the 3rd, Wil Quintana was on first base with 1 out.  Maestrales popped the ball up, and it was fielded by shortstop Eric Martins on the edge of the infield grass.  An infield fly should obviously been declared, making Maestrales out automatically, but the umpires did not signal one.  In fact, League umpires rarely do (see game 10 on May 11 for a more egregious example).  If anyone has any insight into the League’s disdain for this rule, please e-mail us!
