Supplementary Game Notes

Game 97:  Long Island Ducks @ Newark Bears, Saturday, August 16, 2003

Top of the 7th inning:  The error charged to Pito Ramirez (see the E3 on Norm Hutchins' advance from first to second on the scorecard) doesn't tell the whole story.  What happened was, Hutchins was on first and took off for second when Gustavo Escobar hit the ball pitched by Rolando Viera.  Escobar lined it right back to Viera, who had great presence of mind and threw immediately to first base to try to double up Hutchins.  Ramirez missed the throw, Hutchins advanced to second base, and Ramirez was charged with the error.  Even though you can't assume a double play when deciding whether to charge an error for a failed second out, this case merits an error on two counts:  the failure to get the second out was not on the thrower but on the fielder receiving the throw; and the muffed ball allowed the runner to advance.

Bottom of the 8th inning:  The error charged to Tom Caputo was for dropping a pop foul by Wil Quintana.
