Supplementary Game Notes

Game 109:  Atlantic City Surf @ Newark Bears, Thursday, August 20, 2003

Atlantic League umpiring seemed to reach a new low point tonight with a number of very poor calls.

Bottom of the 2nd inning:  With Hipolito Martinez on first base (having reached on a single), Paul Esposito hit a grounder to third base.  Surf third baseman Brandon Jackson threw to second baseman Raul Marval to force Martinex out, but Marval was nowhere near the bag when he caught the ball, and never got near it before attempting to relay to first base (he didn't get Esposito).  Nonetheless, umpire Roberto Herrera called Martinez out.  Granted, the effect of this was likely negligible since the next ball was hit the same way and probably would have ended the inning, but there was no way the umpire could have known that!  We haven't seen a call this egregious since the divisional playoffs last year in Atlantic City....

Bottom of the 3rd inning:  Mike Piercy legged out a grounder toward short and clearly beat the throw to first base, albeit by a slim margin, yet umpire Juan Puntiel called him out.
