PETE MAESTRALES WINS TWO AWARDS IN EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP -- TEAM TAKES SILVER MEDAL

July 19, 2003:  Pete Maestrales picked up two awards for individual effort as his Greek team took the silver medal in the Seniors Championship of the Confédération Européene de Baseball (C.E.B.), which ended today in The Netherlands.  Despite his relatively low batting average of .143 through six of the eight games (the most recent statistics available), Pete showed his aggressiveness on the basepaths and won the individual awards for runs scored (11) and bases stolen (6)!

Greece finished second in the tournament with a record of 6-2, behind The Netherlands, who were dominant with a record of 8-0, winning one game by 21 runs!  (Check out the roster for the Dutch team -- see any former Bears?)

They play with different rules in Europe:  according to the C.E.B. official Competition Rules, if one team is leading the other by 10 runs or more after 7 innings of play, the game ends!

Congratulations to Pete, and we eagerly await his return to Newark!

P.S.  In the course of our research for this article, we discovered that in Dutch, the word for baseball is honkball, and the word for baseball player is honkballer!!
