August 14, 2003:  The Newark Bears announced today that Michael Coleman (two left photos) has been picked up by the Cincinnati Reds and will be assigned to their AAA affiliate in Louisville (joining another recent Atlantic Leaguer - former Long Island Ducks pitcher Kevin Baez, who was signed earlier this month).  Michael was an offensive powerhouse for the Bears since joining the team in early June.  He leaves the team with a .320 batting average, and a league-leading 23 home runs and 68 RBIs.  Earlier in the season he played the outfield, but settled into an everyday role at first base later in the season.

The team also announced that pitcher Matt Wagner (second from right, and with former Bear Tom Hage, right) has been traded to the Atlantic City Surf for future consideration.  Matt was a consistent starter for the Bears, accumulating more innings pitched (121.2) than any other pitcher on the team.  Matt was the Fan Club Player of the Month for July, and leaves us with a record of 9-5 (including 2 complete games and a 1-hit shutout -- see game 23's results), and an ERA of 3.25.  The Surf next roll into town for a series starting on August 27.

Newark Bears Fan will miss both players and wishes them the best of luck with their new teams!
