The scoreboard tracking Paul Esposito's progress around the defensive map

September 14, 2003:  The Newark Bears and the Pennsylvania Road Warriors had a challenge in store for those of us trying to keep score at the last game of the 2003 season -- and, in fact, the last game for the Road Warriors forever, as their club will be superseded by a new team in Lancaster, Pennsylvania starting with the 2004 season!  Take a look at today's box score to see that one Bear (Paul Esposito) and two Road Warriors (Asbel Ortiz and Juan Rodriguez) played all nine defensive positions in the game!  Look carefully at Asbel Ortiz's line and you'll see that he played all the positions in order: pitcher, catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, left field, center field, and right field (1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9)!

Other unusual occurrences included:

  • Bears pitcher Jaime Navarro pinch hitting for Hipolito Martinez (he struck out)

  • Bears pitcher Damon Ponce Deleon pinch hitting for Mike Piercy (he walked, stole a base, and scored!)

  • Road Warriors pitcher (and former Bear) Steve Gagliano playing the outfield and batting

  • Various Road Warriors position players pitching

  • A grand slam by Omar Rosario of the Road Warriors

Perhaps the most unusual thing that happened was a violation of Rule 3.03.  This is the rule that provides that once a player is removed from the game, he may not re-enter it.  In today's game, after Jaime Navarro pinch hit for Hipolito Martinez, and Kyle Perry pinch hit for Eddy Martinez, Hipolito and Eddy resumed their places on the field the next inning... and nobody appealed!
