27, 2004: The Bears announced this week that they have signed two players, both
of whom played part of 2003, for the 2004 season. They are outfielders
Michael Coleman, and Hipolito Martinez.
Coleman, whose major league experience includes stints with the Red Sox and the
Yankees, signed with the Bears last season and attended spring training before
going to play in Mexico. He re-joined the Bears in June, and put up exceptional
numbers, batting .320 in 61 games, with 23 home runs and 68 RBI. He was picked
up by the Reds in August and assigned to AAA Louisville.
Martinez, who has six years with the A's organization, joined the Bears in July
2003 after rehabilitation following an injury sustained during spring training
with the Cubs. He also put up good numbers, batting .273 in only 44 games, with
7 home runs and 15 RBI.
