More spring training coverage

Homestead, Florida (April 25, 2004):  The Newark Bears came out of hibernation and arrived here on Friday to start spring training for the 2004 season.   Most players and coaches arrived in the area that day, with the players taking their physicals.  Saturday's activities included a brief orientation by the league president, Joe Klein, and then workouts.  Intersquad games start on Tuesday (schedule).

Six Atlantic League teams do their training in Florida:  the Newark Bears, Long Island Ducks, Nashua Pride, Pennsylvania Road Warriors, Bridgeport Bluefish, and Somerset Patriots.  (The Atlantic City Surf and Camden Riversharks train in New Jersey.)  (photos)

Newark Bears Fan speaks with Joe Klein at orientation

Saturday's events began around midday with a brief introduction by Joe Klein.  Klein stressed the importance of staying healthy through spring training, saying that one sure way to not make the cut for opening day is to get injured.  "Most of our clubs have a pretty good feel for the pedigree of these players -- it's not like they're total rookies," said Klein.  "They're ready to play, and the last thing they need is another three weeks in Florida [due to injury].  All they have to do is maintain [their health] now and... go to work on Thursday the 6th!"  He also generated some excitement by telling the guys that there were eight former Atlantic Leaguers on the MLB opening day rosters*, and that 150 players have gone from the Atlantic League to affiliated clubs since the inception of the league.  "We're 150 for 150," he said, pointing out that the league never stands in the way of a player going to affiliated ball.

After orientation, the teams then split up to separate fields for stretching and other exercises, then pitching, hitting, and throwing practice.  Newark Bears Fan saw many familiar faces (including Jason Torres -- see related story) as well as many of the new recruits, and all were excited to be gearing up for the season.

Spring training ends on May 2.  Check back with Newark Bears Fan for continuing coverage!
