BEARS ROLL OVER PRIDE, 11-0

Pitching and offense lead the way in the first exhibition game of 2004

More spring training coverage

Wil Quintana

Homestead, Florida (April 27, 2004):  The Newark Bears opened the 2004 exhibition season with a decisive win over the Nashua Pride, scoring 11 runs as they shut out the Pride.  The Bears combined for 13 hits and drew 10 walks in the game.  Leading the offensive attack were Eddie Lara, with two hits and two RBIs, Danny Clyburn, who stroked a long double in the second inning, and Pete Maestrales and Mike Piercy, each of whom had two hits to his credit.  Piercy and Jason Torres each scored twice in the game.  Clyburn said after the game, "the team looks real good," but qualified his observation by saying, "it's only the first game we played -- you can't really judge the team now."

Pitching was also an important factor, as the zero on the Pride side of the ledger attests.  Six Bears pitchers chalked up 8 strikeouts among them, with Eddie Ramos starting the game and earning three of those Ks.  "We've got guys with arm strength into the 90s, which we didn't have last year," observed manager Bill Madlock as the team left the field.

21 Bears participated in today's game, with Wil Quintana, Mike Piercy, and Pete Maestrales playing the whole game.  Here is the list of all the players who were in the game, with the starting lineup indicated with an "S."
