BEARS TASTE DEFEAT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2004

Loss to Ducks brings the Bears back to Earth

More spring training coverage

Homestead, Florida (April 29, 2004):  Despite garnering 8 hits and racking up 10 strikeouts (6 of them by Edison Reynoso in the first three innings), the Bears fell to the Ducks 7-3 today to register their first loss in the exhibition season.  The Bears showed hustle on the basepaths, with Bryan Wright legging out a triple and Jack Joffrion stealing second base.  In both cases, the runners were able to capitalize on their aggressiveness:  in the 7th inning, Joffrion was able to score from second on a single by Jay LaFlair; and in the 9th inning, Wright scored on a sacrifice fly by Eddie Lara.  The Ducks pulled ahead for good in the 4th inning with a two-run home run by Justin Davies.

With the loss, the Bears' record is 2-1, and the Ducks remain the only undefeated team in Homestead, with a record of 3-0.

[Note: The Long Island Ducks' website reported the score as 8-2, but this is incorrect.  The correct score was 7-3.]

18 Bears participated in today's game, with Mike Piercy, Jay LaFlair, and Chris Van Rossum playing the whole game.  Here is the list of all the players who were in the game, with the starting lineup indicated with an "S."
