PATRIOTS POWER AND BEARS FIELDING FOIBLES LEAD TO SOMERSET ROUT OF NEWARK, 12-2

Bears sloppy as they commit six errors in the field

More spring training coverage

Homestead, Florida (April 30, 2004):  The Bears never had the lead against Somerset this morning, as the rivals met for the first time in 2004.  The defending Atlantic League champions buried the Bears under a blizzard of 14 hits, including a two-run home run by Jeff Nettles in the second inning.  Victor Rodriguez led the team with three hits, and besides Nettles, extra-base hits were credited to Paul Ottavinia, Tony Gsell, and Edgard Clemente.

Despite their own onslaught of 10 hits the Bears could only eke out two runs.  Though Danny Clyburn showed some hustle by trying to stretch a single into a double in the top of the second, he was thrown out at second on a close play.  Nor did they help their own cause:  errors were committed at all four infield positions, plus one in the outfield, which led to several of the Patriots' runs.

The ball was put into play a very high percentage of the time this game, with only one walk issued and 12 strikeouts rung up by the combined pitching staffs.  Eddie Ramos started the game for the Bears and went four innings -- the longest outing for a Bears pitcher this pre-season.

The Bears and Patriots each are now 2-2 for the pre-season.

The Bears used 18 players in the game, and the Patriots used 15.  For the Bears, Danny Clyburn, Eddie Lara, Mike Piercy, Wil Quintana, and Jason Torres played the entire game, and for the Patriots, Edgard Clemente, Emiliano Escandon, Tony Gsell, Jeff Nettles, Paul Ottavinia, and Victor Rodriguez played the entire game.  Here is the list of all the players who were in the game, with the starting lineups indicated with an "S."
