Dutch team wins Haarlem Honkbal Tournament; Maduro is MVP

August 2, 2004:  Former Bears pitcher Calvin Maduro was on the mound for the Netherlands as the Dutch national team beat a tough Cuban national team in the finals to win the gold medal during Holland’s annual baseball tournament of exhibition games, which ended yesterday in Haarlem.  Maduro pitched seven scoreless innings, with his fastball topping out at 91 mph. Maduro, who also pitched a fine game against Japan earlier in the week, was named MVP.

In addition to Maduro, former Bear Sharnol Adriana is on the Dutch team, and former Bear Hensley “Bam Bam” Meulens is a bench coach for the team.  The team heads now to Rome, Italy, for a week of practice before going on to Athens for the Olympics later this month.  Their first Olympic game will be on August 15 against the Greek team.
